biography

Rise to the presidency of parliament, arrest and prison

After visiting the Franciscan College of Shkodra, he studied medicine at the University of Bologna . In 1942 he broke off his studies and then took part in the communist anti-fascist war of independence during the Second World War from 1942 to 1944 .

He was a member of the 118-person Anti-Fascist Council for National Liberation , which was elected as a transitional parliament by the Përmet Congress in May 1944 and helped the Communists to come to power. In 1945 he was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly ( Asamblea Kushtetuese ). In the following period he was first Vice Minister for Education and Culture and thus Deputy of Sejfulla Malëshova , before he was editor-in-chief of Zëri i popullit , the organ of the PPSh, from 1948 to 1957 .

In 1950 he became a member of the People's Assembly ( Kuvendi Popullor ) for the first time and was a member of this as a representative of Peshkopia from the second legislative period until December 9, 1973. In addition, he was a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the PPSh for several years .

In addition, he was between January 1, 1965 and March 18, 1966 as the successor to Manush Myftiu Minister of Education and Culture. His successor in this office was Thoma Deljana . For several years he was also a member of the Central Committee of the Union of Writers and Artists and party secretary in Tirana County .

During this time he was President of the People's Assembly from 1970 to September 25, 1973 .

In December 1972 he was one of those responsible for the implementation of the XI. Music festivals Festivali i Këngës , at which western music was played for the first time and young women could be seen in mini skirts . The departure from the festival, which was previously characterized by socialist realism , led to criticism within the leadership of the PPSh. At the 4th plenum of the PPSh Central Committee, which took place from June 26 to June 28, 1973, he and Todi Lubonja were severely criticized and both of them were accused of undermining real socialist party discipline.

At the same time he lost his functions within the PPSh and the Union of Writers and Artists, which accused him of treason against the party and the Albanian people and called him an opponent of the party and the nation. Nexhmije Hoxha , the wife of the then First Secretary of the PPSh Enver Hoxha , who was also the director of the Institute for Marxism-Leninism in Tirana, had a major influence on his arrest . Subsequently, Dritëro Agolli became chairman of the Union of Writers and Artists.

After losing his office, he was arrested by the Sigurimi secret police on October 21, 1975 and spent 18 months in custody before being charged with sabotaging culture and infecting youth with Western influences. A court then sentenced him to 25 years ' imprisonment in 1977 , of which he served more than fifteen years, including his pre- trial detention , until his release on health grounds shortly before the collapse of communism in 1991.
