Dritëro Agolli (born October 13, 1931 in Menkulas , Devoll district , † February 3, 2017 in Tirana ) was an Albanian writer and publicist .

Life

Agolli attended high school in Gjirokastra and studied journalism in Leningrad in the 1950s . Since his return to Albania he has lived in the capital Tirana. Initially, Agolli worked for the communist party newspaper Zëri i Popullit for some time . He published his first poems in 1958.

In his works - poems as well as short stories and novels - he idealized the socialist system and celebrated the so-called new man whom the Albanian communists had set out to educate. From 1973 to 1992 Agolli was chairman of the Albanian Writers' Union. From 1974 to 1996 and from 1997 to 2001 he was a member of the Albanian Parliament .

Agolli's works, created between 1958 and 1990, are not just flat praises of communism. His poems are subtle and of great linguistic beauty and are read to this day. His 1973 satirical novel Zylo or the adventurous journey through the wondrous world of bureaucracies was widely regarded as an amusing criticism of the party bureaucracy. Even after the end of the communist dictatorship in 1990, he continued his work as a writer. Until his death, the Tirana-based author was very productive and published a new book almost every year.
