The Nëna Shqipëri war memorial

Mother Albania ( Albanian  Nëna Shqipëri [ nəna ʃcipəɾi ]) is a national personification of Albania in the form of a female figure who symbolizes the country of Albania ( Albanian  Shqipëria , fem.). The allegory was mainly used during communist rule , for example in a poem by Dritëro Agolli . However, the figure is of older origin: Pashko Vasa and other earlier nationalists used the term mother Albania to form a nation , which gives all Albanians a home regardless of their religion.

Location of the monument in the Tirana Heroes' Cemetery

Above all, the large monument on the Heroes' Cemetery in honor of the fallen in World War II in the Albanian capital Tirana is known . It is located on a hill in the southeast of the city at the entrance of the partisan cemetery Varrezat e Dëshmorëve të Kombit (National Martyrs Cemetery ) . The 22-meter-high monument consists of an eleven-meter-high statue and the pedestal and is reminiscent of Soviet Mother-Homeland statues . The statue is made of concrete and shows Mother Albania wearing a laurel wreath and a star on her right hand. Mother Albania is to symbolically watch over the eternal sleep of those who gave their lives for her. The monument was built in 1971 according to plans by Kristaq Rama , Muntaz Dhrami and Shaban Hadëri as a central element of the newly created Heroes Cemetery. On the front of the pedestal is the inscription Lavdi e Përjetshme Dëshmorëve të Atdheut (Eternal Glory for the Martyrs of the Fatherland) . In the cemetery there are a total of 28,000 graves of partisans from the Second World War. The grave of the decades-long dictator of Albania, Enver Hoxha , was also located here until it was exhumed in 1992 and transferred to a public cemetery with a simpler tombstone.
