Kemama ( slang for "Okay, Mama") is a pop song by Benny Cristo with which he was supposed to represent the Czech Republic at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest .

background

Benny Cristo emerged from the national preliminary decision of Eurovision Song CZ 2020 with Kemama as the winner, receiving the most votes in the online survey and being placed second by the jury.

On January 20, 2020 the music video for Kemama was released, which was directed by Tomas Kasal. At the end of January Cristovao published an unplugged version of his title, which was accompanied on the piano by Adam Albrecht.

Cristo published a revised version in March, which received a further revision a week later.

Music and lyrics

The song is strongly influenced by the genre-typical characteristics of electronic dance music and reggae . Characteristic is the synthesizer played with delay throughout the song . The beat is subdued over the course of the stanzas and is mainly perceptible through the four-on-the-floor rhythm. In the chorus the beat becomes more complex and features handclaps on the second and fourth notes in 4/4 time. The text is written entirely in English . Cristo introduces the chorus with the words "Ok, mama, you know" (German: "Okay Mama, you know" ), from which the title can also be derived. So "Kemama " is to be understood as slang or the slang spelling of the words "Okay Mama" .

reception

A revised version of the title caused a lot of criticism from fans. Cristo then expressed himself in a six and a half minute long video on Instagram , in which he said he wanted to find out if a mistake was made. A survey initiated by Wiwibloggs magazine showed that two thirds of those who voted were in favor of the version originally published.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

The Czech Republic should have performed with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.
