Initial D ( jap. 頭 文字 Dイ ニ シ ャ ル ・ デ ィ ー, Inisharu Dī , dt. “Initiale D”) is a manga by Shūichi Shigeno and an anime series based on it. The manga was published from 1995 to 2013 and can be classified into the genres of action and sports .

action

Set in the late 1990s, Initial D tells the story of Takumi Fujiwara , an 18-year-old boy who helps his father's tofu business by delivering to the hotel on Mount Akina in a Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 - AE86 for short - every morning . His daily drives make Takumi a very good driver, but initially he is not interested in road racing.

One day the Akagi Redsuns challenge the Akina Speedstars to a race. There is no one among the speed stars who comes close to the skills of the brothers Ryousuke and Keisuke Takahashi , but suddenly a completely outdated Hachi-Roku ( English : eight-sixs ) appears in Keisuke's rear-view mirror and defeats him superiorly. It is known that Takumi was the driver of the AE86. Keisuke wants revenge. The speed stars are happy to have found a competitive man and send him into battle. Takumi is reluctant to participate because he doesn't believe in street racing. However, he wins a second time and the racing driver in him awakens. The further course of the series is about the duels against his opponents and how he slowly learns to control his car completely.

Most races are in Sudden Death mode. For a winner to be determined, the leader must either clearly distance himself from the man behind or he must overtake the leader. In Initial D , all duels take place on mountain passes, with a distinction being made between downhill  - down the mountain - and hillclimb  - up the mountain. At the beginning of the series, Takumi only had a chance on the downhill, as his outdated AE86 was not that far behind. He and most of the other drivers rely on their drifting skills to be faster than the rest.

Manga

The manga was published from 1995 to 2013 in the weekly Young magazine of the Kodansha publishing company. In total, the chapters were summarized in 48 anthologies ( Tankōbon ).

In the USA, 33 volumes in English translation were published by Tokyopop from 2002 to 2009 .

In the US version, the music was taken out by the local licensee Tokyopop and replaced by hip-hop , which led to protests among fans of the series.
