biography

Jay Chou was raised by his mother and was a calm and shy child. Because he was interested in music at a very early age, he started playing the piano at the age of three. At the age of 16 he was already writing songs for musicians who were successful at the time.

Chou made his first appearance in the music business when he and a friend took part in a talent show. Here he appeared as a pianist. They landed far behind the winners, but the show's producer decided to give Chou a shot because of his impressively complex piano score. Because Jay's appearance couldn't keep up with that of the big stars, he initially only worked as a composer for other artists, including Vivian Hsu and Jacky Wu. Many of these songs became big hits, although the songs mostly consisted of simpler sound structures.

In 2000 it was decided that Chou could release an album under his own name. His first album Jay was a huge success, although few people expected it, and even in the whole Chinese-speaking area (including mainland China , Taiwan , Hong Kong , Malaysia , Singapore etc.). When his second album Fantasy , which contained less experimental but more radio-friendly songs, was released, he was already one of the biggest pop stars in the Chinese-speaking world. The CD with which he was able to celebrate the greatest successes both financially and critically is his third album, The 8 Dimensions .

In 2005 Jay played a role in the film Initial D (Takumi Fujiwara), which was based on a Japanese manga. The film became a huge hit in Asia with premieres in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Japan. The cast also includes other stars such as Anne Suzuki , Edison Chen and Anthony Wong Chau Sang.

In 2006 he played alongside Gong Li and Chow Yun-Fat in the film The Curse of the Golden Flower by star director Zhang Yimou, the imperial prince Jai, which was also a great success in Asia. In the same year he won the World Music Award .

In 2007 Chou made his debut as a director, screenwriter and producer with the self-biographical film Secret , and he also took on the lead role. The film won various awards and was nominated for best Asian film at the 27th Hong Kong Film Awards.

In 2009 Sony Pictures planned a remake of the series The Green Hornet with Bruce Lee for the cinemas, and the creators succeeded in winning Jay Chou for the role of Kato alongside Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz . The film, directed by Michel Gondry , was released in German cinemas on January 13, 2011.

In April 2016, Chou acquired the Taipei Assassins professional League of Legends team and renamed it J Gaming .
