biography
Anthony Wong was born as Anthony William Perry to a British and a Chinese woman . The father left the family when Anthony was four years old, so he took his mother's surname. In school he was often teased because of his Gweilo origin. He later processed these experiences in the lyrics of his songs.
Anthony Wong began his acting career at the age of 21 in the training program of the TV station ATV (Asia Television). He then enjoyed training at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts . Like many of his colleagues, he appeared on TVB (Television Broadcasts) series before making the leap to the big screen. His first major role was the Shaw Brothers production My Name Ain't Suzie (1985).
However, it was not until the Category III shocker The Untold Story (1993) and the action film Hard Boiled (1992) by John Woo that he made his breakthrough as a star. For the role of serial killer Wong Chi Hang in The Untold Story , Anthony Wong won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor.
In the 1990s he took on other leading roles in Category III shockers ( Ebola Syndrome (1996)), action films ( Rock n 'Roll Cop (1994)) and shone with supporting roles in blockbusters, such as the Young and Dangerous series. Another high point of his career was the cop thriller Beast Cops (1998), which earned him his second Hong Kong Film Award. The critically acclaimed film marked a comeback for Wong, who previously suffered from severe thyroid dysfunction.
A year later, Wong shot the gangster film The Mission (1999) with other Hong Kong greats such as Francis Ng and Simon Yam , his fifth collaboration with successful director Johnnie To. The new millennium saw his popularity rise again when he took on the role of SP Wong in the hugely successful Infernal Affairs trilogy.
Since then, Wong has appeared in international productions every now and then, such as in the literary film The Colorful Veil (2006) with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts and in the third part of the mummy series The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
Anthony Wong is known for his ambivalent choice of roles, in which cheap productions by Wong Jing alternate with artistically high-quality films by Ann Hui and Sylvia Chang or blockbusters by Andrew Lau . He has been celebrated and has received numerous awards for his extreme versatility, whether he plays psychopathic killers, corrupt police officers or lovable father figures. Apart from the film cameras, he never skimp on criticism of his domestic film industry and the Hong Kong entertainment circus.
When he's not making films, Anthony Wong takes to the theater or records punk rock albums.
