Johnnie To (2009)

Johnnie To Kei-fung, known as Johnnie To ( Chinese  杜琪峰 , Pinyin Dù Qífēng , Jyutping Dou 6 Kei 4 fung 1 ; born April 22, 1955 in Hong Kong ), is a Chinese film director and producer from Hong Kong who has made over 65 films himself has shot and produced over 70 films.

Life

Johnnie To started his career in 1974 as a production assistant at the Chinese television broadcaster Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). Only three years later he rose to the position of director and producer in the drama department of the company. His first own production followed in 1980 with The Enigmatic Case ( 碧水 寒山 奪命 金  /  碧水 寒山 夺命 金 , Bìshuǐ Hánshān Duómìngjīn ). In the 1980s and 1990s, an extremely productive and successful creative phase followed with over 30 films, which made him known beyond the country's borders.

He became famous when his 1989 film The Story of Ah Long ( 阿郎 的 故事 , Āláng de Gùshi ) starring Chow Yun-Fat became one of the biggest box office hits of the year in Hong Kong. He also shot a lot of comedies , such as Needing You ( 孤男寡女 , Gūnán guǎnǚ ) and action films , such as B. PTU ( Police Tactical Unit ). In recent years, many of his films have been featured at the world's most famous film festivals, such as Throw Down ( 柔道 龍虎榜  /  柔道 龙虎榜 , Róudào Lónghǔbǎng ) 2004 and Exiled ( 放 ‧ 逐 , Fàng ‧ Zhú ) at the Venice Film in 2006 Festival . In 2004 Johnnie To received an award at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Breaking News ( 大 事件 , Dàishìjiàn ) . His films have also been featured at the Toronto Film Festival , the Berlinale and the Asia Filmfest since 1999.

In 2008 To was appointed to the competition jury of the 65th Venice Film Festival under the chairmanship of German director Wim Wenders . A year later he received an invitation to compete at the 62nd Cannes International Film Festival for Vengeance ( 復仇  /  复仇 , Fùchóu ), in which Johnny Hallyday plays a former professional killer in Hong Kong . Two years later, To was named to the competition jury at the 64th Cannes Film Festival . In 2011, Life Without Principle ( 奪命 金  /  夺命 金 , Duómìngjīn ) Tos was invited to the Venice Competition for the third time . In 2015, his film Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 ( 單身 男女 2  /  单身 男女 2 , Dānshēn Nánnǚ ) was shown at Critique Week .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
