Divlji vjetre ( Croatian for wild wind ) is a Croatian-language pop song written by Ante Pecotić and interpreted by Damir Kedžo . With the title they won the Dora 2020 and should represent Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

Ante Pecotić has already written several articles for the Dora, the last time in 2019. Kedžo, on the other hand, took part for the second time. Pecotić wrote Divlji Vjetre seven years before the festival. He had been waiting for the right moment because a confident singer was needed for the title. He preferred to take his time instead of making a hasty decision. At the Dora, Kedžo was accompanied by Anja Stanić, Ana Kabalin, Medea Market Sindik, Gina Škulić and Mateja Majerle as background singers .

The title was arranged by Bojan-Shalla Šalamon and Matija Rodić.

Music and lyrics

According to the interpreter, the production of the arrangement was inspired by classic film music such as Inception and Gladiator . He described the text as "poetic". It is about a relationship that one of the partners ends after many years for no reason. With the song he wanted to describe the anger, but also the love of the abandoned. With the expression of the "wild wind" he wanted to describe the missing person and was referring to the phenomenon of ghosting .

The song consists of three stanzas, which differ in length and structure. The chorus is sung twice. In the first version, Kedžo sings it alone before the choir sings a line ( Ono što nisi više ). The second repetition is sung by the choir, using the characteristic retraction . Kedžo's singing starts at the end of the first line.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Croatia should have performed with this song in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

According to Aleksandar Dragaš of the Jutarnji list , Aklea Neon's competing Dora contribution would have been the only correct choice. Similar titles like Divlji vjetre were often unsuccessful at the ESC.

ESCXtra assigned the title to the so-called "Balkan Ballads". The song received praise for the end and Kedžo's voice. On the negative side, it was noted that the title would hardly be remembered. According to ESC Kompakt, “the wheel will not be reinvented here either”, but it is still a pleasant contribution. The last minute of the title is the best because “a lot is still going on vocally, rhythmically, dramatically with great power”. Irving Wolther described Divlji Vjetre as "incredibly conventional".

publication

The title was released on a sampler from Croatia Records on March 2, 2020 along with the rest of Dora contributions . Two weeks later, a slightly revised and shortened version of the song was released as a single. On May 18th, an EDM remix and music video was released. It shows Kedžo in front of the Islamic Center in Rijeka . Mladen Đaković directed the film.

Commercial win

In the week after the Dora, the title immediately took first place on the national charts.
