The Krummhörn landscape protection area is a landscape protection area in the Aurich district and in the area of the city of Emden in the state of Lower Saxony . It serves to implement the EU bird sanctuary V30 "Krummhörn". The city of Emden and the district of Aurich are responsible for the area as lower nature conservation authorities.

Description of the area

The 51.97 square kilometers protected landscape area, designated on April 19, 2013 by the district of Aurich and the city of Emden, is located in parts of the municipalities of Krummhörn and Hinte (both districts of Aurich) and the independent city of Emden. It is assigned to the Emsmarschen natural area and extends inland dykes in the immediate vicinity of the main dike between Emden and Greetsiel in a sparsely populated area. On the lake side it borders on the Wadden Sea National Park. A small part of the landscape protection area is located as an exclave between the town of Hauen and the dike line. To the north and north-west, it partially borders the Leyhörn nature reserve . To a large extent, the landscape protection area is part of the EU bird sanctuary "Krummhörn".

The open landscape without large stands of trees is characteristic. The agricultural areas are mainly used as arable land and grassland. Water courses such as sewer depths , individual smaller bodies of water, which were created in particular from Kleipütten, reed beds and dykes divide the area.

Protection purpose

The general purpose of protection is the “preservation and development of the area as a habitat for animal and plant species in need of protection and their communities, as well as a natural cultural landscape of special character, diversity and beauty”. A special protection purpose (conservation goal) for the landscape protection area in the European bird sanctuary is the “maintenance and restoration of a favorable conservation status”. This should be done through the "protection and development of the area in its function as feeding, wintering, migration, resting and breeding area as well as in its networking function to other European bird sanctuaries in the natural area, the preservation and promotion of a long-term survivable population in particular the value determining species of the Birds Directive and the preservation and promotion of a long-term viable population, in particular the value-determining migratory bird species can be achieved ”.
