The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2002 in Tallinn took place on February 22, 2002 in Kiel's Ostseehalle . The event could be seen live in the first . Axel Bulthaupt moderated.
Field of participants
Fifteen titles were admitted to the preliminary round, more than in previous years. Among the artists were the Weather Girls , Bernhard Brink , the Kelly Family , the comedian duo Mundstuhl and the fun punk band SPN-X . Three artists had already represented Germany at the Grand Prix: Nino de Angelo in 1989 , Ireen Sheer in 1978 and Joy Fleming in 1975 . The big favorite of the evening, however, was Corinna May , who took part in the German preliminary round for the third time after 1999 and 2000 .

Voting mode
The viewers could vote by phone and SMS. As in the previous year, there were two voting rounds. The three best-rated titles from the first round were up for election in a second round. The winner represented Germany at the ESC final.
During the voting break, Schiller performed with the singer Isgaard and presented the title A beautiful day . The song stayed in the charts for seven weeks and reached number 40.
Result
As in previous years, the ARD only announced the result of the second voting round. Corinna May won with her title I Can't Live without Music and received 41.1 percent of the vote. Joy Fleming + Jambalaya ( Joy to the World ) finished second with 32.5 percent, Normal Generation? ( Hold On ) Third with 26.4 percent. For the first time since the Silver Convention in 1977 Germany sent an English contribution to the final.
