In 1978 the German contribution was determined in a new mode.

After the experiences of the previous years, the Südwestfunk, responsible for the preparations this year, tried a new mode. For the selection, two partners were won with GEMA and the Federal Association of the Phonographic Industry. A nine-member jury made up of three GEMA employees (no composers who took part), three disc jockeys and three music journalists selected the entries for the final. The composers were asked to send in contributions.

Only 53 entries were submitted, as there were only a few days between the request by the Munich GEMA office and the dispatch of the conditions of participation and the deadline for submission.

Initially ten titles were selected, which are subsequently supplemented by five more for the final.

In the finale, the titles were presented on the radio at the beginning of March 1978 and a listener survey by the Bonn opinion research institute infas was evaluated. This survey should contribute to a third of the rating.

A new eight-person jury made up of four GEMA employees and four music journalists should contribute two-thirds to the result. However, this jury suggested that none of the entries be sent to Paris, as they did not see any of the titles as suitable for the competition.

Those responsible for the competition at SWF did not share this opinion and therefore used the audience survey as the sole criterion for the selection.

Ireen Sheer led just ahead of the groups Sunrise and Peter, Sue & Marc . Thus her title Feuer was presented to the audience as a contribution on April 15, 1978 in the program Auf Los geht's los with Joachim Fuchsberger .

Ireen Sheer took 6th place with 84 points at the Eurovision Song Contest in Paris .
