Magnifico
Magnifico is the stage name of the Slovenian singer, guitarist, songwriter and actor Robert Pešut (born December 1, 1965 in Ljubljana ). After abandoning his studies in economics, he founded the band U Redu in 1988 and then embarked on his solo career.
In his self-deprecating pieces, sung in Serbian, Romanes and a peculiar English, the pop singer delivers “a Balkan music parody that reflects clichés, while never going too far and, above all, in a good mood”. In addition to the entertainment value, he is also interested in the critical examination of social problems. Stereotypes and prejudices are exposed, with jokes being made “against machismo, xenophobia and homophobia”. One of the fruits of this work for more tolerance was the participation of the transsexual trio Sestre 2002 in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002, which represented Magnifico's home country Slovenia with the song Samo Ljubezen (Only Love) written by Magnifico . The production of this song became a political issue, discussions even broke out in parliament. Magnifico's statement on this in an interview: “The really serious provocateurs sit in parliament, I'm just an entertainer. I'm here to bring relaxation and enlightenment. ”Magnifico, which has its roots in both Slovenia and Serbia, cannot be clearly identified. This is expressed in his music, which brings together a wide variety of musical genres, styles and stylistic devices: Balkan wind instruments, disco beats, surf guitars, American folk, ex-Yugoslav rock, gypsy chants and smacking of love. He owes it to his individuality that he “doesn't fit into any drawer in his home country. [...] ". It attracts teenagers as well as intellectuals: "His concerts are accompanied by the screams of teenage girls, the nodding of machos and deep discussions of intellectuals."
In Germany he became known in 2008 with his appearance in Dortmund at the Balkan Festival "Mi Plešmo".
