The Andaman cuckoo pigeon ( Macropygia rufipennis ), also known as the Nicobar cuckoo pigeon, is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs exclusively on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands . This pigeon species is even more common in the Andaman Islands. In contrast, it is much rarer on the Nicobar Islands. Exact population figures for this species are not available. However, the IUCN classifies it as a potentially endangered species ( near threatened ) because there is sufficient evidence that the population of this species is declining.
Appearance
The Andaman cuckoo pigeon reaches a body length of 30 centimeters. It is therefore somewhat smaller than a city pigeon and has a considerably longer tail compared to this.
In the male Andaman cuckoo pigeon, the head and neck are red to reddish-brown, the throat is slightly lightened. The underside of the body is reddish-brown, with the belly merging slightly into yellow-brown. The neck, chest and stomach are finely pitted. The top of the body is dark brown. The gender dimorphism is low. In the female, the skull is rusty red. The stripes and spots on her chest and stomach are almost completely absent.
Way of life
The Andaman pigeon lives mostly in pairs. Their diet includes berries and fruits. It inhabits evergreen forests, which are also widespread on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It also uses secondary forest and is also used in gardens for feeding. Almost nothing is known about their reproductive habits.
