background

Brendan Graham had previously composed the song Rock 'n' Roll Kids , the previous entry to the 1994 competition that Ireland also won. In 1996 Ireland celebrated its seventh contest victory . Graham had submitted The Voice as a proposal in a version that he had recorded with the neo-traditional Celtic band Dervish . In 1995 Graham had heard the young Eimear Quinn sing at a Christmas concert by the Anúna Choir at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin , who performed one of his compositions there in a solo performance. He was so enthusiastic about her that he asked her to perform The Voice at the finale of the "National Song Contest" at the Point Theater in Dublin, where the song emerged as the winner.

content

The song begins with the words: " I hear your voice on the wind, and I hear you call out my name ... " (German: "I hear your voice in the wind, and I hear you call my name ...") The anthropologist E Moore Quinn compared the lyrics in her post 'She must have come steerage:' The Great Famine in New England Folk Memory with the memories of Irish immigrants after the great famine, as the song also tells of hunger and torment.

At first the voice seems to speak to a child and the child repeats the words he has heard:

"Listen my child", you say to me
"I am the voice of your history
Be not afraid, come follow me
Answer my call and I'll set you free."

"Hear my child," you say to me,
"I am the voice of your story.
Do not be afraid, come and follow me.
Answer my call and I will set you free."

The voice tells that it is in the wind and rain, it is the voice of hunger and pain, the voice that calls for you forever, an inner voice that, like a memory, never fades. It comes from the past and is in mourning, in the blood in the fields, in the rustling of the leaves ... The voice tries to convey that the wounds only heal when you have found your own peace. “ I am the voice of the future, bring me your peace […] and my wounds, they will heal. "(German:" I am the voice of the future, bring me your peace [...] and my wounds, they will heal. ")
