Failure of the German contribution in the internal pre-selection of the EBU

The German entry was not automatically qualified for the ESC final, but took part in an internal round of elimination in which the juries of all participating countries selected the 23 final entries. This internal preselection was introduced at short notice, as far more countries (30 in total) wanted to take part in the ESC than were planned. Except for host Norway , all countries had to submit to the internal preselection.

The German contribution did not pass the internal selection, which was the first time that Germany did not take part in the ESC. The departure caused a lack of understanding in Germany, especially since the result of the internal vote was not published. During the broadcast of the final on German television (in the third program on NDR ), commentator Ulf Ansorge expressed his opinion several times that some of the contributions were worse than the German one.

If there had been no internal selection, Germany would not have qualified either. The last place in 1995 would automatically have meant a suspension for Germany, so that the internal EBU selection meant a “second chance”.
