Maarja-Liis Ilus (born December 24, 1980 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian singer who twice took part in the Eurovision Song Contest . Since then, Ilus has become one of the best-known and most popular singers in Estonia and often appears on television.

biography

Maarja-Liis Ilus (stage name: Maarja ) attended the children's music school and high school in Tallinn. After graduating from high school, she studied law at the Law Institute of Tartu University in Tallinn. She was on stage for the first time at the age of four. She sang and played in numerous children's musicals in Estonia during her school days .

Ilus made his debut on the record market in 1996 with the album Maarja-Liis . First in Line followed a year later , which was a success in Estonia and was eventually released internationally. In 1997 she released the CD Kaua veel mostly in Estonian . In December 2001, their fifth album City Life was released .

In March 2003 Ilus entered the Swedish Eurovision preliminary decision, the Melodifestivalen , with the title He Is Always on My Mind in the fourth semifinals. However, she only reached sixth place there and was eliminated early. A year later she tried again, but this time again in Estonia. With the title Homme she reached fourth place out of ten participants in the preliminary round.

Her last studio album Kuldne põld was released in Estonia in 2012.

In 2004 Ilus also appeared as the singer of the group Hinkus, with whom she released the album Look Around in March 2005 . Between 2009 and 2015 she was also a juror for several seasons at Eesti otsib superstaari , the Estonian version of Germany is looking for the superstar .

Ilus is in a relationship with the Estonian songwriter Fred Krieger, with whom she has had a daughter since January 2018.

Eurovision Song Contest

She took part in the Eurovision Song Contest twice: In 1996 , when she was 15, she sang together with Ivo Linna Kaelakee hääl and came in fifth. In 1997 she reached eighth place with Keelatud maa for Estonia. In 2007 she moderated the Estonian preliminary round with Marko Reikop .
