Urban Symphony is an Estonian band that combines folk with electronic pop music . She represented Estonia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow with the song Rändajad (German "Nomaden").

history

The musician and singer Sandra Nurmsalu had focused on classical music and Estonian folklore in her career so far. Ten years of training as a violinist and several years of membership in the folk bands Pillipiigad and Virre marked her career.

In autumn 2007 she took part in the Estonian talent show Kaks takti ette . One of the tasks set for the show is that the participants found their own bands, produce them and record pieces with them. To do this, Nurmsalu brought Halstein and Johanna deficiencies into the project. Defects had already gained experience in various Estonian rock bands (Aides, Slide-Fifty and Vennaskond). After the show ended, they decided to continue the band and took Mari Möldre as a further member. The Estonian producer Sven Lõhmus invited them to work together and finally got them to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009.

At the national Estonian preliminary decision Eesti Laul 2009 on March 7, 2009 in Tallinn , the group was able to prevail against nine other competitors. In the ESC final, the band took sixth place in the victory of Norwegian Alexander Rybak .

The song Rändajad was followed in 2009 by Päikese poole (German for “ towards the sun”) and in 2010 by Scorpio . All three pieces are composed by Sven Lõhmus and, with the exception of Rändajad, are only available for download so far .
