The Palais Dauerbach ( Romanian Palatul Dauerbach ), also Palace , is a three-story listed building on the Piața Victoriei of the western Romanian city of Timișoara .

history

The palace was built between 1911 and 1913 as a residential building for Georg Dauerbach according to the plans of László Székely on a plot of 1240 m², which was acquired by the city administration for 250,000 Koruna . The impressive building has a high, dark facade in an eclectic style with elements of the Baroque and Art Nouveau ( Vienna Secession ) with offset ceramic work, and dominates the row of buildings.

The three-story building with central and side projections has a five-part facade with a curved roof structure. The facade is structured by plaster pillars that delimit six window axes and a central balcony axis.

Since the beginning there has been a café and a restaurant on the ground floor. The first tenant was Henric Berger , who reached an agreement with the city administration regarding the use of the outside area, the arrangement of the tables and chairs and the size of the parasols. The Palace was for a long time one of the most beautiful and elegant restaurants in the city and was very popular among the city's youth in the first half of the 20th century, especially because of its musical performances. A pharmacy has been operating on one corner of the building since the early days. After the Second World War, the restaurant was closed and used as a storage room. The Palace restaurant reopened in the late 1960s. An amusement arcade was also operated here, but the establishment was closed again in the following years.

The building came into the possession of Palace Aktiengesellschaft before World War II and was nationalized afterwards . Since at that time a stock corporation was the owner and the shareholders were not all members of the same family, the heirs have no right to a restitution of the building, only to compensation. Nevertheless, more and more heirs came forward and went to court, where the proceedings were delayed. The trading companies based on the ground floor of the building have expressed an interest in acquiring the premises, but this is not possible without a final court ruling on the ownership structure. The process is expected to be further delayed.
