The Capitoline Wolf ( Romanian Lupoaica Capitolină ) is a listed life-size bronze figure of the Capitoline Wolf on the Piața Victoriei in the 1st district of Cetate in the western Romanian city of Timișoara . Like the original, it nurses the legendary founders of Rome , Romulus and Remus . The statue is one of the city's landmarks.

description

The Capitoline Wolf is an exact replica of the Lupa Capitolina in Rome and a gift from this city in 1926 to Timișoara as a symbol of the common Romanesque roots of the Italian and Romanian people. The monument is located in the middle of the green between the opera house and the Cathedral of the Three Holy Hierarchs and is mounted on a 4.96 meter high column.

history

The solemn unveiling of the monument took place on April 23, 1926, in the presence of the mayor Samuil Șagovici , the Romanian minister of culture Vasile Goldiş , the minister of labor Grigore Trancu-Iaşi and a delegation from the Italian government. The statue was handed over by the then Italian consul in Timișoara, Codecca .

After the Vienna arbitration of 1940, when Northern Transylvania was awarded to Hungary , a protest demonstration took place in the center of Timișoara. Since Italy, under the dictator Benito Mussolini , advocated Hungarian territorial claims, the statue drew the displeasure of the demonstrators and was temporarily removed from the city center.

Statues of this kind can also be found in numerous other Romanian cities, including the capital Bucharest since 1906, Cluj-Napoca since 1921 and Târgu Mureş since 1924. These three, like the one in Timişoara, are also a gift from the city of Rome. Replicas can be found in the cities of Satu Mare , Galați , Constanța , Brașov , Alba Iulia , Dej , Năsăud and Sighișoara . Another replica was located in the Moldovan capital Chișinău from 1921 , which was destroyed in 1941 when the Soviet Union came to power .
