The Palais Széchényi ( Romanian Palatul Széchényi ) is a listed three-story building on Piața Victoriei in the western Romanian city of Timișoara . The newspaper Evenimentul Zilei described the palace as "the most beautiful building in the center of Timișoara".

history

The Széchényi Society had the palace built between 1900 and 1914 according to the plans of the architect László Székely . The architectural style is eclectic , with elements of Baroque and Art Nouveau ( Vienna Secession ).

The building was equipped with three elevators . The ground floor was redesigned in 1914 to create additional business and office space. In 1916 the office space of the Széchényi company, a joint stock company , was expanded by a further 16 m² through the purchase of land.

Between 1960 and 1990 the Express self-service restaurant was operated here with home-style cooking in a modest atmosphere . Today the ground floor again consists of a number of business premises, including the popular Violeta pastry shop , the Helios art gallery and the Millennium Bank . During the Romanian Revolution in 1989, the events in front of the Cathedral of the Three Holy Hierarchs were filmed from one of the windows .

The three-storey building has a corner projection above the entrance, which ends in a roof turret and three façade projections with triangular gables, which frame the balconies and window axes.
