The 19th Eurovision Song Contest took place on April 6, 1974 in the English seaside resort of Brighton . The BBC stepped in as the host at short notice after last year's winner Luxembourg decided not to host the competition again. The event was broadcast in 32 countries and seen by 500 million television viewers. The English TV presenter Katie Boyle presented the Eurovision Song Contest for the fourth time.
particularities
The event is considered to be one of the great moments of the competition: for the Swedish group ABBA , victory was the start of an international career.
As part of the 50th Anniversary Show of the Eurovision Song Contest , Waterloo was voted the best song of the Grand Prix out of all 50 winning titles in 2005.
Nevertheless, with 15% jury votes received after 1969, this was the vote with the relatively worst result for the winning title.
Malta withdrew from the competition for unknown reasons, but intended to participate with the selected song Paċi Fid Dinja (Peace in the World) by Enzo Guzman. This has been confirmed by the performer. Malta wanted to return to the competition in 1975.
Three weeks after the competition, on April 25, 1974, the Portuguese contribution E depois do adeus became the symbolic song of the Carnation Revolution .
The event was broadcast on Italian television with a delay of more than five weeks, as a referendum on the admission of divorce was scheduled in Italy for May 12, 1974 and the RAI authorities were able to influence voting behavior through the Italian contribution Sì (Yes) from Gigliola Cinquetti wanted to prevent.
For the first time a title by Ralph Siegel was performed at the Grand Prix. With the song Bye, Bye, I Love You composed by him , Ireen Sheer took 4th place for Luxemburg.
Attendees
For the first time Greece took part in the Eurovision Song Contest. France originally wanted to start with the title La vie à 25 ans by Dani , but after the death of President Georges Pompidou four days before the competition, participation was canceled due to national mourning. 17 countries took part.
Voting procedure
Two days before the competition, it was decided to return to the voting procedure that was in place from 1967 to 1970 and from 1957 to 1961. In each country there were again 10 jury members who were each allowed to give one vote to a song. The results were communicated by telephone and publicly.
