The summer melody was the German contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 , which was sung by Cindy & Bert .

Music and lyrics

The hit song , orchestrated with strings and a few winds in the chorus, is characterized by a few changes in tempo and a shift towards the end, it was later also characterized as "a bit clumsy". The text is about a summer love affair, which, however, comes to an end again: “The summer melody is just dreaming / We're both in love / And that can't be for the two of us / The summer melody that says you're not free / And this time of roses will come to an end ... "

Origin and reception

The song was written by Werner Scharfenberger together with Kurt Feltz (text). Kurt Feltz was the producer. The single, published by BASF in April 1974 , failed to make it into the charts. They later recorded the song in English as Our Summer Song of Love . A Swedish cover version of the New Singers as En sommermelodi was also published by Polydor . Cindy & Bert did not appear in the ZDF hit parade at the time of publication with the song, because they were still successfully represented with Spain's guitars from March to May ; however, they sang it much later in the summer hit parade from Binz on July 4, 1996, although, as in the song contest, only the eighth and last place jumped out.

Song contest

Cindy & Bert, who had already participated in the preliminary decision of the Grand Prix in 1972, prevailed in an internal jury decision . On the evening of the contest - the performers were dressed in strong shades of green - the author Werner Scharfenberger conducted himself. Two male and two female background singers formed the choir; Compared to the single recording, the wind instruments were clearly more dominant towards the end. At the end of the vote, the song had received three points and finished 14th and last in a field of 17, together with Portugal , Switzerland and Norway .

In 1978 the duo tried their luck again in the preliminary round of the Grand Prix, but did not make another appearance.
