Freddy Christmann

Fred "Freddy" Christmann (born May 11, 1931 in Wattenheim ; † December 1, 2007 in Schneverdingen ) was a German modern jazz trumpeter .

Christmann comes from a musical family; the trombonist Egon Christmann is his brother. Freddy Christmann attended the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main from 1940 to 1944 to study violin. In 1946 he switched to the trumpet to work in the army clubs of the American occupation forces in the Rhine-Main area from 1947 to 1949. Then he moved to Munich, where he worked with Paul Martin , Jutta Hipp , Delle Haensch and Hans Koller . From 1953 to 1957 Christmann led a quartet together with Pepsi Auer and played both with this combo and from the mid-1950s with the "German All Stars" at festivals. In 1958 he became a member of the Hessischer Rundfunk jazz ensemble . In 1960 he founded a quartet with Gustl Mayer , Pepsi Auer and Günter Lenz . Between 1963 and 1966 he was a member of Kurt Henkels' big band . He then headed the “Jazz House” in Hamburg , where recordings were also made for the “Happy Bird” label, which he co-founded. He was still active as a musician and is represented, for example, on the jazz rock record "Free Jazz Goes Underground" by Free Orbit with Udo Lindenberg ( MPS ).
