Josef 'Pepsi' Auer (born June 14, 1928 in Munich ; † March 29, 2013 there ) was a German jazz musician (pianist, initially vibraphonist).
Career
Auer first played the accordion in a youth orchestra from 1936, then taught himself to play the vibraphone as an autodidact . From 1945 he worked as a musician in American clubs. In 1949 he switched to the piano and from 1954 played in the combo of Freddy Christmann , which he took over in 1956.
Pepsi Auer was on tour with Freddie Brocksieper (1957-1958) and the German All Stars (1958) and worked from 1958 to 1960 with Albert Mangelsdorff's " Jazz Ensemble des Hessischer Rundfunks " and then with Kurt Edelhagen . In the 1960s, his style approached that of Bud Powell and Horace Silver ; from 1962 he worked in the jazz ensemble of Bayerischer Rundfunk . Auer accompanied Stan Getz , Eric Dolphy and Benny Bailey (of which radio and television recordings were published) on their tours through Germany, but also Miriam Klein and was involved in recordings by Freddie Brocksieper and the German Allstars between 1955 and 1964 . From the mid-1960s he increasingly worked as a studio musician and composer of television music (e.g. series "A Summer with Nicole"). In 1967 Auer took part in the Montreux Jazz Festival with the Bavarian Radio Jazz Orchestra, where he met Don Menza as a co-leader.
