Lange became known for jazz radio broadcasts in Berlin immediately after the war and since the 1950s has been one of the leading jazz experts in Germany thanks to numerous magazine articles. He was best known for his discography of German jazz and a history of jazz in Germany, which appeared in 1966 and for a long time was the only available publication on the subject in book form. Today it is partly outdated by new research.

In 1991 he published a book on early jazz history, in which he focuses on the contributions of "white" musicians such as the Original Dixieland Jass Band , who in his opinion have received too little attention in jazz historiography. In particular, he advocates the thesis of the "invention" of jazz by Nick LaRocca from the Original Dixieland Jass Band, with whom he was personally known and who described himself early on as the inventor of jazz. This is in marked contrast to the generally accepted theory about the origin of jazz ( history of jazz ).

Long is said to have had a record collection of over 20,000 records. He lived in Berlin.

Horst H. Lange died in Berlin in February 2001 at the age of 76. His grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: 5-G-3).
