Will Brandes (born January 11, 1928 in Münstedt ; † April 8, 1990 there ) was a German pop singer.
Life
Brandes first completed a commercial apprenticeship and later trained as an opera tenor in Braunschweig . From 1958 he appeared as a pop singer. He signed his first record deal with the Cologne record company Electrola and tried his hand at German cover versions of successful English-language titles such as Wach auf little Susie ( Wake Up Little Susie , Everly Brothers ) or King Creole (of the same name by Elvis Presley ). From the beginning, Electrola also produced duet recordings with Brandes and various singers. With Conny Froboess he had his first major success in 1958. The titles Teenager Melodie and I would like to dream with you , both published under catalog number 21052, reached 7th and 13th place respectively in the music magazine Musikmarkt . Other partners were Ruth Fischer and Hanna Dölitsch. Brandes' greatest success at Electrola was the German adaptation of the Italian title Marina , sung by Rocco Granata . Will Brandes' version was represented in the German hit lists for 19 weeks between December 1959 and May 1960 and achieved its best rating at number 7. The record had sold over 500,000 times by the end of 1960. At the time, it was customary for music producers to see to it that their artists also gained popularity through the motion picture. Brandes was also given the opportunity to take part in two music strips. In 1959 he sang together with Conny Froboess and Rex Gildo in Hula-Hopp, Conny , and in 1960 he appeared with Bill Ramsey and Dany Mann in the film The Riddle of the Green Spider .
When Marina Brandes' record career was unsatisfactory overall, he switched to the then largest German record company Polydor in the summer of 1961 . After five unsuccessful releases, including a duet record with Lolita , Brandes achieved the greatest success of his recording career in the fall of 1962 with the title Baby-Twist . It was a follow-up to the title Babysitter-Boogie , which was successful with Ralf Bendix in 1961 and which Bendix also brought out at the same time as Babysitter-Twist at Electrola. While Bendix achieved huge success with the Boogie in 1961, Brandes was clearly ahead with his twist. Bendix was only able to place itself in 29th place, on the other hand Brandes pushed up to second place and was listed in the music market for 22 weeks . With another baby song, the Baby-Babbel-Bossa-Nova , Brandes reached ninth place in the music market in December 1963 , but it was also his last hit parade listing. TV appearances also took Brandes to the GDR , which led to a special collaboration with the GDR record company Amiga . In 1963 Polydor acquired the title Kartaeuser Knickebein Shake , published by Amiga with Lutz Jahoda , and produced his own version with Will Brandes (catalog number 52230). Two years later, Amiga and Brandes released the song Ich hab keineylinder (catalog number 450531), which was only produced in the GDR . In 1966 Brandes' record deal with Polydor ran out. In 1967 he made another record with his daughter Marina at the small record company Alcora, after which, apart from a few nostalgic appearances, he retired from show business. He then worked as a businessman and in the catering trade . Brandes died at the age of 62 on April 8, 1990 in his hometown of Münstedt.
