Dany Mann , also Danny Mann , Sybille Pagel (born February 21, 1938 in Stettin ; † May 29, 2010 in Munich ; real name Sybille Danielle Pagel ), was a German pop singer , jazz singer and actress .

Life

During the Second World War, Sybille Pagel, the third and youngest child of a wealthy entrepreneurial family, fled to Hanover with her mother . She later moved to live with her aunt, the writer Eva Döring , in Basel . After the end of the war, Pagel returned to the capital of Lower Saxony, where she graduated from high school and enrolled at the Academy for Music and Theater . As the singer of the New Jazz Group Hannover , she performed in and around Hannover. From the mid-1950s, he performed nationally at numerous renowned jazz festivals.

Friends persuaded Pagel in 1955 to take part in the nationwide singing competition The great chance of the record company Electrola . In addition to the singer Ralf Bendix and the pianist Ingfried Hoffmann , Pagel was one of the three winners who received a record deal. Sybille Pagel could not land a success with her first single , which contained two hits produced by Hans Bertram and arranged by Paul Kuhn . Two Electrola records released in 1956 did not find enough buyers to establish themselves in the charts. In addition to jazz and acting , recordings initially remained nothing more than an interesting sideline for Pagel. In 1956 Pagel married the British John Mann, to whom she had been engaged for a long time. She moved with him to Amsterdam , where she first appeared as a jazz singer under the stage name Dany Mann . Later the marriage broke up.

In 1957 Pagel signed a contract with the Polydor record company , where she worked under her real name with producers and musicians such as Erich Bender , Bert Kaempfert , Werner Müller and Horst Wende . In 1958 she moved from Hamburg to the Polydor Studio Vienna to the successful music producer Gerhard Mendelson , who marketed Pagel under her stage name Dany Mann, initially written by Danny Mann . With Sexie Hexy , the German-language cover version of the Connie Francis hit Stupid Cupid , the singer made her breakthrough. When selecting other hits, producer Mendelson deliberately relied on modern arrangements and Danny Mann's youthful charisma. The artist worked with well-known colleagues such as Louis Armstrong , Karlheinz Böhm , Johannes Fehring , Günther Frank , Erwin Halletz , Harald Juhnke , Peter Kraus , Werner Scharfenberger and Peter Weck on recordings, concert tours, film and TV appearances .

While filming, Dany Mann met the show host and pop singer Chris Howland , with whom she began a relationship. Howland drew the attention of the music producer and hit composer Heinz Gietz to his partner, who in turn switched to the Electrola label in 1960/1961. With the German cover version of the Sue Thompson hit Norman , Dany Mann achieved another success in 1962. The title stayed in the German charts for 20 weeks. As before with the Polydor, the sales figures for their recordings decreased overall. In 1964 she released her last single on Electrola; that ended her hit career. She now devoted herself primarily to her career as an actress, increasingly appeared in more serious film roles and, after her relationship with Chris Howland failed, married the Austrian film director Herbert Vesely (1931–2002). After the birth of her son, she devoted herself primarily to her duties as a mother and housewife. With her brother Helli Pagel - 1961 "decoy" in the television series Caution Camera with Chris Howland - she recorded what is probably her last record, the LP Brüderleinlinge - German folk songs , in 1966 at the German branch of Vogue .

Professionally, Dany Mann continued to focus on acting. She played theater and occasionally appeared in front of the camera in cinema and television films. Since the death of her husband, the artist has lived in seclusion in Munich . Most recently she suffered from senile dementia and was cared for in a retirement home . She died in a hospital in Munich.
