Rainer today
Rainer heute (born June 28, 1962 in Stuttgart ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , flute ).
Live and act
Today, who grew up in Viernheim , learned the clarinet before turning to the saxophone at the age of 17; he had lessons with Hans Laib and attended workshops with Sal Nistico , Dave Liebman and Bobby Watson . After completing a bank apprenticeship, he worked as a professional musician from 1985; he played first in Circus Roncalli , then in the State Youth Orchestra of Hesse, before founding his own quartet and with the Mannheim Big Band, with Rainer Pusch , with Bill Ramsey , with Jiggs Whigham , in the German fusion formation Zebra . After studying at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern (1987–1991), he was a member of Chaka Khan's touring band and from 1993 to 2000 he was a member of the SDR Big Band . From 1999 he led his own bands such as the Sultans of Swing and at times also the Mannheim Big Band. Since 2001 he has been a member of the hr big band as a baritone saxophonist .
He has also recorded records with Thilo Berg , Bobby Burgess , Joe Haider , Peanuts Hucko , Jazzkantine , Paul Kuhn , Dieter Reith , the Frankfurt City Blues Band and the Frankfurt Jazz Big Band.
