Joe Nay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes "Joe" Nay (born May 10, 1934 in Berlin ; † December 22, 1990 near Munich ) was a German jazz musician , composer and drummer .

Live and act

After Nay had studied guitar at the Berlin Conservatory, he changed instruments in 1958; during a stay of several months in Paris he became a drum student of Kenny Clarke . Between 1961 and 1963 he played in Michael Naura's quintet and developed alongside Hartwig Bartz , Ralf Hübner and Klaus Weiss to become one of the most important German jazz drummers. Michael Naura has apostrophized him as the “perfect heater” and the “heartbeat of the quintet”.

Together with the pianist Jan Huydts and the bassist Peter Trunk , he formed the house rhythm group in the Berlin jazz cellar Blue Note from 1963 . This trio accompanied American stars such as Roland Kirk , Don Byas , Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin with great success .

After an interlude in Dusko Goykovich's International Quintet , Nay founded the group Space Rangers Orbit Company in Munich in 1972, in order to then work with Volker Kriegel . He later played with Randy Brecker , Leszek Zadlo and Jasper van't Hof . His Northern Lights at the end of the 1970s included Johannes Faber , Andy Scherrer , Harry Pepl , Christoph Spendel and Adelhard Roidinger . In the eighties he led the group Message , in which musicians such as Harry Sokal and Paul Grabowsky played. In total he has worked on over 80 LP or CD recordings.

He died as a result of a car accident.

His son Sebastian Nay (* 1966) is also a jazz drummer, works with pianist Tine Schneider , among others , and in 2016 remembered his father's work as a composer.
