In 2001 Bob Sapp started his wrestling career with little success. He signed a development contract with World Championship Wrestling , but was never used. After this disappointment, he switched to the Japanese MMA organizer Pride . After a few victories there he got the chance to win the world title on August 28, 2002. However, Sapp had to admit defeat to then champion Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira after 4:03 minutes in the second round after a surrender (armbar).

He played his first K-1 fight on June 2, 2002 against Tsuyoshi Nakasako , whom he lost by disqualification in round 1. He was able to win his three following fights, u. a. he beat the K-1 experienced kickboxer Ernesto Hoost twice in action-packed fights . At the beginning of 2003 he lost to Mirko Filipović by knockout.

In August 2003 he challenged former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson to a duel, which did not materialize.

In December 2003 he managed a knockout victory against former sumo wrestler Akebono . The two opponents brought a total weight of almost 400 kg into the ring.

On September 21, 2003 he played his first K-1 fight according to MMA rules that suit his physical strength and fighting style, and defeated Stefan Gamlin . In 2004, however, he was also shown his limits by Kazuyuki Fujita , which was technically superior to him and finally forced him to give up.

Meanwhile he signed a contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling and won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in early 2005 . By winning the K-1 Japan GP 2005 he qualified for the 2005 K-1 World GP , but had to admit defeat to Choi Hong-man in the elimination round . He previously held multiple world champion in July 2005, arm wrestling , Alan Karaev knocked out.

On March 13, 2006 Bob Sapp was supposed to be opponent of four-time K-1 champion Ernesto Hoost in his last fight. Sapp, who had previously defeated Hoost twice, appeared at the press conference, but (according to Sapp and K-1) not to fight after failed contract negotiations. This behavior of his had the consequence that those responsible for K-1 canceled the fight with Sapp and brought Hoost's long-time rival Peter Aerts as a substitute opponent. Sapp was then released from his contract.

After one and half year absence, he returned on June 23, 2007 Back to Peter Aerts in the K1 ring but lost to a knee to the solar plexus ( solar plexus ) after only 24 seconds knockout.
