Klaus Weiss (drummer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klaus Weiss (born February 17, 1942 in Gevelsberg ( Westphalia ); † December 10, 2008 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm ) was a German jazz drummer .

Live and act

In the 1960s he played in the Klaus Doldinger Quartet and, alongside Ralf Hübner and Joe Nay, developed into one of the most important German modern jazz drummers . In 1967 he became the drummer in Erwin Lehn's orchestra ; he was involved in numerous big band projects and also led his own large formations. Between 1971 and 1973 he was also behind the Niagara fusion project . In recent years he has mainly performed with his quintet and trio. He can also be heard on albums by Attila Zoller , George Gruntz , Dusko Goykovich , Mal Waldron , Fritz Pauer , Friedrich Gulda , Hampton Hawes , Eugen Cicero and Ingfried Hoffmann .

He referred to Sid Catlett , Klook, d. H. Kenny Clarke , Art Blakey , Buddy Rich and Philly Joe Jones . Some connoisseurs believe that they can hear influences from Shelly Manne from his always competent playing . Johnny Griffin rated him as " one of the few European drummers with that distinctive American feeling. "

Weiss played with the following musicians, among others: Benny Bailey , Cecil Bridgewater , Don Byas , Philip Catherine , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Jerry Dodgion , Kenny Drew , Booker Ervin , Wilton Gaynair , Herb Geller , Roman Schwaller , Johnny Griffin , Slide Hampton , Billy Harper , Clifford Jordan , Herbie Mann , Howard McGhee , Don Menza , Tete Montoliu , George Mraz , Sal Nistico , Walter Norris , Horace Parlan , Bud Powell , Jerome Richardson , Tony Scott , René Thomas , Peter Trunk and Leo Wright .

Weiss was still on tour in Japan in 2008 (with Robert Lakatos and Thomas Stabenow ). He died unexpectedly of heart failure.
