Carmell Jones (* 19 July 1936 in Kansas City (Kansas) , † 7. November 1996 ) was an American jazz - trumpet .

Life

Jones, who had been friends with Nathan Davis since childhood , attended the University of Kansas after four years in the army (where he also led his own quintet) , the teaching methods of which prompted him to drop out. Horace Silver tells of him that he orientated himself on Clifford Brown , whose sound is really similar to Carmell's playing in Silver's quintet. He played with Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson in Kansas and moved to the West Coast, where he played with Shelly Manne , Teddy Edwards , Buddy Collette and Bud Shank . From 1961 to 1964 he was a member of Harold Land's band , but also played with Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars and Gerald Wilson's orchestra . In 1964 he became a member of Horace Silver's band , with whom he stayed for a year. From 1961 to 1963, albums under his own name were released on the jazz label Pacific Jazz . Jones went to Europe in 1965; he became a member of the dance orchestra of the Sender Free Berlin and played in the quintet of Johannes Rediske and later of Heinz von Hermann . In Berlin he also performed with Quincy Jones , Don Ellis , Dave Pike and Stan Kenton . In June 1980 he returned to Kansas City.

During his career, Carmell Jones has also made records with Sarah Vaughan , Charles McPherson , Herbie Mann , Booker Ervin , Gerald Wilson , Red Mitchell , Jean-Luc Ponty , George Gruntz , Oliver Nelson and Jay McShann .

His daughter, the jazz and soul singer Stella Jones , who was born in Berlin in 1971 , has lived in Vienna since 1977.
