The green finger (DVD title: Paul Temple - The green finger , original title: Send for Paul Temple , theatrical version title in Austria: Die Todesfalle ) is a British crime film from 1946. It is the first of four feature films that are based on based on one of the Paul Temple radio plays by Francis Durbridge . The film premiered in Great Britain on December 23, 1946, and was shown for the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1947. The film tells the very first Paul Temple story and also tells how the writer Paul and his future wife Steve get to know each other. Neither the radio play Send for Paul Temple from 1938 nor the novel of the same name, which was published later, were ever translated into German.
action
Scotland Yard is dealing with a series of mysterious diamond heists. Soon there will also be a first death. The press demands that crime writer Paul Temple be included in the case, as he has helped the police several times in the past with his unconventional investigative methods. When Detective Inspector Harvey also falls victim to the gang, his sister Louise turns to Temple in desperation. Louise herself works as a journalist under the name Steve and goes on a murder hunt with Paul. Who is the big man behind whom everyone only knows as the “diamond villain”, but whose real face no one has seen? All traces lead to an English pub, to which there is also an underground secret passage. In addition to three police officers, the host and a mysterious Miss Marchment are highly suspected of being behind all the crimes. Even when a murder attempt is carried out on Paul, he does not give up and in a surprising finale is able to expose the diamond villain and bring him to justice.
criticism
"A crime film based on a simple script from the Paul Temple series."
"Send for Paul Temple" offers classic nostalgic thriller suspense with all the ingredients you would expect from a real Durbridge thriller. Every 15-20 minutes there is an exciting turning point, which is due to the cliffhanger moments from the underlying radio play. "
The other Paul Temple films

- Hunt for "Z" (1950)
- Paul Temple and the Marquis Fall (1952)
Others
The story is based on the radio play "Send for Paul Temple", which Francis Durbridge wrote in 1938 as an eight-part for the BBC. It was never realized in German and was the start of Durbridge's sensational career as a crime writer.
DVD publications
The film was released by Renown Pictures in English-speaking countries in 2009, and in 2015 Pidax released a German DVD that contains extensive bonus material (in addition to audio commentary, an interview with Francis Durbridge's son and a Paul Temple short story that has never been translated). Since the original German dubbing has been lost, a new dubbing version was made for the DVD release in 2015.
