action

Tenor Stefan Berger does not spend the time shortly before an important concert rehearsing, but to the chagrin of his manager Pannecke in a hospital, where he visits his former nurse Luise and sings a song to the sick children. At the scarlet fever station, the orphan Eva hears Stefan singing and is so moved by the song that she sends Stefan a letter. Manager Pannecke, who reads the letter during Stefan's summer vacation in his villa on the Gulf of Naples , smells good PR. He invites Eva to Italy without Stefan's knowledge , where she is allowed to live in Stefan's villa for four weeks. Meanwhile, however, Stefan has fallen out with his wife Carola because she secretly met her admirer Enrico Alovanis behind his back - she only rejected him. Carola, on the other hand, is frustrated because Stefan never goes into company and doesn't want to get to know her friends, but prefers to live with the fishermen on Capri and his best friend Beppo. While Stefan is traveling to Capri, Carola goes to her mother. Eva, who appears while preparing to leave, is put into an expensive children's rest home by Pannecke.

Carola has a guilty conscience and would like to bring Eva to her home. When an employee of the Pannecke children's home reports that Eva is sad and would like to see Stefan in person, he makes an appointment in the villa, knowing full well that Stefan is on Capri. He himself also leaves, so that Eva is met by Stefan's secretary, Miss Wenig. When she sees Eva's grief, she spontaneously travels to Capri with her. Here she loses Eva in the fray while looking for Beppo's apartment. Meanwhile, Eva saw Stefan briefly, who went out to sea with the fishermen. With a fisherman boy and a broken boat she tries to catch up with Stefan's boat. The boat capsizes and Stefan, who has become aware of the distress of the two children, can just save Eva from drowning and hand it over to a boat of the coast guard .

Meanwhile, Carola has been looking for Eva and is shocked by the accident. She wakes up at Eva's bed until she comes to and promises never to leave her alone again. In the meantime, Fraulein Wenig is briefing Stefan about the events surrounding Eva, who knew nothing about Pannecke's entire plan. When Eva has recovered and is playing with other children, Stefan appears and, like Carola, takes Eva in his arms. Both drive back to Stefan's villa as a small family and watch the sunset together.

criticism

For the film service , The Voice of Longing was a “harmless touching piece with singing and many landscape shots; superficial dream factory entertainment. "

Cinema called the film a “frosting sponge, made for star tenor Schock (1915–1986). Conclusion: Children and songs: That's really conservative ”.
