Thomas Engel (1947)

Thomas Engel (born April 18, 1922 in Hamburg ; † May 7, 2015 in Kreuth ) was a German director and screenwriter .

life and work

The son of the director Erich Engel attended the drama school of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin from 1940 and also took on small theater roles.

In 1942 he went to the theater of Gera as an actor , where he also worked as a theater director from 1943 . After the end of the war he returned to Berlin in 1946, where he worked again as a director at the Deutsches Theater and the Theater am Knie until 1949. He also wrote his own plays such as flotsam .

In 1950, Engel became a dubbing director for MGM Germany, who was responsible for dubbing American films until 1952. In 1953, under the artistic direction of his father Erich Engel, he made a much-noticed debut as a film director with Pünktchen and Anton based on the novel by Erich Kästner .

As a result, Engel directed primarily film comedies and around 1960 several hit films typical of the time . After my daughter and I with Heinz Rühmann , he became a pure television director . In addition to numerous comedies and series episodes such as two Tatort episodes, he directed several literary adaptations such as Die Zofen (1964) based on Jean Genet and Heinrich IV. (1967) based on Luigi Pirandello .

Thomas Engel was married to the actress Gisela Trowe (1922-2010) from 1944 to 1964 . From this marriage two daughters were born. 1944 the daughter Angelika (married von Rosenberg) † 2013, 1945 the daughter Barbara Pier (married until 2001), who works as a painter in Hamburg.

From 1964 he was married to Marianne Högl († 2012).

His archive is located in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
