The Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera is an international opera festival initiated by the composer Siegfried Matthus in Rheinsberg , in which, as a result of an international singing competition, young artists are given the opportunity to rehearse and perform opera parts under the guidance of mentors. The festival has been held annually in July and August since 1991. The open-air performance venues are the hedge theater in the palace gardens, the palace courtyard and the stage in front of the Kavalierhaus. Another venue is the palace theater, which was restored in 2000. In 2014 Frank Matthus , the son of Siegfried Matthus, became director of the chamber opera. In the same year, the Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera and the Rheinsberg Music Academy (Federal and State Academy) merged to form Musikkultur Rheinsberg gGmbH. Thomas Falk has been the managing director since September 1, 2016. In autumn 2018, Professor Georg Quander took over the artistic direction of the Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera and the Federal Music Academy. Felix Görg has been at his side as the new head of the academy since 2019.

On September 8, 1990, the art and culture association Rheinsberg eV was founded and commissioned Siegfried Matthus to lead the festival of young opera singers “Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg”. The first opera performed was Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke , by Siegfried Matthus and took place in 1991. Since then, the chamber opera has presented over 70 opera productions. Conductors and directors work on opera roles with the young singers under professional conditions. The festival cooperates with orchestras from the state of Brandenburg - the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt (Oder) , the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra , the Potsdam Chamber Academy, the Prussian Chamber Orchestra and, for many years, with the Braunschweig State Orchestra .

On December 30th, 1999, the rebuilt palace theater was inaugurated with the world premiere of the opera Kronprinz Friedrich by Siegfried Matthus. A year earlier, the hedge theater, a summer theater from the 18th century in the castle park, had been reconstructed. The hedge theater has an area of ​​750 m² and almost 1000 seats. The Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera also uses the St. Laurentius Church and the Hall of Mirrors of the Rheinsberg Castle for its performances .

The artistic director of the festival was Siegfried Matthus until 2014 . On September 1, 2014, his son Frank Matthus took over the management. In 2014, the Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera and the Rheinsberg Music Academy (Federal and State Academy) merged to form Musikkultur Rheinsberg gGmbH.
