St. Laurentius is a Protestant church in Rheinsberg ( Ostprignitz-Ruppin district ) in the state of Brandenburg . Its specialty is the preserved Renaissance furnishings.

history

The church, dedicated to the martyr Laurentius , was built in several phases. The oldest part of the current building was a hall , probably from the middle of the 13th century, which has been preserved as today's chancel. Early and late Gothic forms in the narrow side windows on the east and north side of today's choir can still be seen, also on the old sacristy built in the south , in the gable triangle of the east wall in the form of pressed pointed arches and on the south wall of the vestibule, "Bridal Hall "Called, which also has so-called German ribbons as jewelry. The roof was damaged in the city fire in 1566. Achim von Bredow (died 1594), who held the church patronage , had the church redesigned. From this period, the completed around 1580 tower, which in the native Baroque period was given a roof to the taste of time. It was later replaced by a pyramid roof. Originally there was apparently a roof tower . The interior was completely rebuilt in the style of the High Renaissance . In the line of sight from the entrance on the west side of the altar there is a massive pillar that divides the nave of the church into two bays and thus creates a two-aisled room. The ceiling height in the nave is lower than that in the choir by a high altar with four pillars, the ornate Corinthian modeled capitals is separated possess. Above these capitals are the double coats of arms of the Bredows, as a sign of secular rule over Rheinsberg. At the end of the 19th century, the facade of the stone church was plastered. The plaster was renewed during the restoration in 1992, which was not without controversy, only the north side shows unplastered masonry.

During the First World War , the church lost two of its bells in a metal collection; the bronze bell was preserved. In 1926 the church received a second steel bell. The bronze bell was melted down during World War II . In 1951 a second steel bell was added to the bell from 1926 .

Furnishing

The furnishing of the church with works of the late Renaissance is of cultural and historical importance. The high altar dates from 1576, with parts of a Gothic winged altar being incorporated. This includes a carved figure relief of the crucifixion . The predella of the altar shows the picture of an unknown painter with the Lord's Supper . What is remarkable about this picture is the depiction of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon , who also sit at the table as disciples of Jesus. The picture was created entirely in the spirit of the Reformation . Something in the background also appears as a disciple of the sponsor and founder of the church renewal, Achim von Bredow.

The pulpit with sound cover was donated by Anna von Hahn, Jobst von Bredow's widow, in the middle of the 16th century. The pulpit was redesigned in 1569. Another foundation is the baptism from the early 16th century made of baked clay with colored relief tiles. They show the coats of arms of the donors, the siblings Anna, Sabina and Franz von Sparr and Anna von Bredows, as well as stations from the life of Jesus.

One epitaph is dedicated to Achim von Bredow and his wife Anna von Arnim , another to their children Christian and Sophia, who died of diphtheria in 1586 eight days apart . According to oral tradition, however, they died from drowning. Theodor Fontane dealt with this legend during his hikes through the Mark Brandenburg .
