Gustav Heinemann Citizen Prize
The Gustav-Heinemann-Bürgerpreis is an award for people, groups or organizations who have made a contribution to freedom and justice in an independent manner. The award was donated by the SPD in 1977 in memory of the former Federal President Gustav Heinemann . It is awarded annually, as close as possible to May 23 , the day the Basic Law is promulgated , and is endowed with 10,000 euros. It should be an encouragement for all to realize the civil virtues exemplified by Gustav W. Heinemann.
The statutes say:
“Freedom and justice in a democratic and social constitutional state, that is what our constitution demands. Gustav W. Heinemann's life's work was designed to make all citizens aware of the wide range offered by the Basic Law. The award of the prize is intended to encourage people to meet these requirements of the Basic Law and to dare more responsible participation and co-determination of responsible citizens in our state in their attitude and actions. "
The suggestions for the award of the award are submitted by a board of trustees appointed by the SPD party executive. The board of trustees includes Christina Rau (widow of the former Federal President Johannes Rau and granddaughter of Gustav Heinemann), Helga Grebing (historian), Peter Heinemann (lawyer, son of Gustav Heinemann), Manfred Wichelhaus (theologian, son-in-law of Gustav Heinemann), Niels Annen , Jürgen Schmude , Christel Riemann-Hanewinckel , André Schmitz , Karsten Rudolph , Brigitte Zypries and Dietmar Nietan . The Chairman of the Board of Trustees is Henning Scherf .
