medica mondiale e. V. is a German women's rights and aid organization based in Cologne . It supports aid projects around the world for women and girls affected by sexualised violence at war. In addition, the organization carries out political education work on the situation of women and girls in war and crisis areas. The main office of the non-profit association is in Cologne.

history

At the end of 1992 the doctor Monika Hauser , shocked by the mass rapes of Bosnian women, set out for the war zone of the successor states of Yugoslavia . In April 1993 she opened the women's therapy center Medica Zenica in the city of Zenica ( Bosnia ) with around 20 local psychologists and doctors. The organizations developed concepts of how war-traumatized women and their children can be helped during the war. In Germany, supporters acquired donations for Hauser's concerns, organized supply convoys to the war zone and mobilized the public. In June 1993 the association medica mondiale von Hauser was founded in Cologne . At the end of 1993 Hauser was voted "Woman of the Year" in the ARD Tagesthemen .

In 1996 Medica Zenica was officially recognized as a humanitarian organization in Bosnia . The association's commitment was expanded to Kosovo and Albania in 1999 , where additional centers for the care of women who were raped and traumatized in the Balkans conflict were established. On the basis of the stress- and trauma-sensitive approach developed in Bosnia, the association's activities were also extended to other countries, for example Afghanistan in 2001 and the southeast of Liberia in 2006 . Projects from partner organizations in the DR Congo , Burundi , Rwanda and Uganda are also supported via a fund . The association has also been working with refugee women in Turkey and Northern Iraq since 2015.

Goals and principles

Monika Hauser, founder of medica mondiale e. V.

According to its own statements, the association pursues the vision that all women and girls can live in a world without violence, and thus in dignity and justice. The association offers women with trauma symptoms medical, social and psychological help as well as legal advice and representation. Locals are trained to work with traumatized women, counseling and health centers are set up, and opportunities to secure a livelihood are created. In addition, crimes against women are documented and legally processed for indictment. The aim is to help people help themselves and to support an independent, equitable life, both through individual work with affected women and through influencing the social and political framework. The same applies to the organizations set up by the association. These women's organizations will then continue to receive financial support and advice.

The organization rejects any kind of nationalism and fundamentalism and sees itself as part of the international women's movement . She advocates tolerance and appreciation of cultural and social diversity, as long as this is compatible with universal human rights. The organization calls for the implementation and further development of Resolution 1325 (“Women, Peace and Security”) of the United Nations, which was passed in 2000.

The association is a member of the Human Rights Forum and the Association for Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid of German Non- Governmental Organizations (VENRO). The association has also joined the Transparent Civil Society Initiative .

Medica mondiale projects worldwide .

Engagement in Afghanistan: In 2001 the German participation in the war in Afghanistan began . A short time later, from the beginning of 2002, the association founded Medica Afghanistan. The women's rights organization has been independent since 2011.

Africa

Since 2004, funding has been flowing through a project fund to selected women's organizations, mainly in the Central African region of the Great Lakes. The association supports partner organizations in the DR Congo , Rwanda , Uganda and Burundi . Medica mondiale has been working in southeast Liberia since 2006 in a joint project with Deutsche Welthungerhilfe to provide medical and psychosocial care and support for Liberian women. The women's rights organization medica Liberia founded there has been independent since 2015.

Commitment in the Middle East: The association has been working in the Syria / Iraq region since autumn 2014 . Due to the civil war in Syria and the unstable political situation in Iraq caused by the terrorist organization " Islamic State ", the association supports women and girls who are affected and threatened by sexual violence both in their home countries and when they are fleeing .

Stress and trauma sensitive approach

Based on the work experience in war and post-war regions, the association has developed a stress- and trauma-sensitive approach to support people affected by violence, especially women. The trauma-sensitive approach takes into account certain basic principles when dealing with people who have experienced violence. It is about avoiding additional stress for those affected. In addition, the stress- and trauma-sensitive way of working should prevent re-trauma and strengthen women in restoring self-esteem. The aim of psychosocial support is to support coping with traumatic experiences. This support goes hand in hand with measures aimed at changing the political framework, structures and social awareness, including training for non-governmental organizations, the police, health and judicial staff.

Lobbying and campaigning

With awareness-raising and human rights work, the association would like to draw attention to social and political changes in favor of women, in Germany and worldwide. At specialist events, in discussions with politicians, but also in position papers and open letters, the organization takes a stand on the topic of sexualised violence at war, names strategies for preventing sexualised violence and calls on decision-makers to act.

The association used campaigns to draw attention to sexualized violence in war and its consequences: In 2005, Zeit zu Speak was a reminder of the crimes against women in World War II. The campaign Im Einsatz from 2008 to 2011 provided information about women and girls in war and crisis areas and asked for support for them. To systematically research the long-term consequences of war rape in Bosnia and Herzegovina , medica mondiale and Medica Zenica carried out a study that was published in 2015.

With the support of the Ministry of Health, Emancipation, Care and Old Age of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia , the association has been offering advanced training for full-time and volunteer workers in the field of flight and migration as well as seminars for health professionals who are involved in the care of refugees. In June 2016, the association developed a position paper on the protection of refugee women in refugee accommodation in cooperation with the Cologne Refugee Council, which was presented to the Ministry of the Interior and Local Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia .
