Michael Hugo

Michael Hugo (* 1962 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German human rights activist , former commissioner for foreigners and has been active in the political and social field since his youth.

Life

Among other things, he worked for almost ten years as a sexton, cook and assistant nurse in Weimar and studied theology in the correspondence course at the theological-philosophical degree in Erfurt . He belonged to the independent peace movement , was a total conscientious objector and was awarded by the Ministry for State Security (MfS) a. a. "Cross" processed in the operational procedure (OV).

Even during the SED regime, he was active in church work for foreigners and was involved in the New Forum Weimar during the peaceful revolution in 1989 . In 1990 he was elected by the Weimar municipal parliament as foreigners commissioner and in 1992 by the Thuringian foreigners commissioner as their state spokesman. Hugo was particularly committed to the equal treatment of East and West guest workers, for an intra-social dialogue between locals and immigrants and for interreligious discussions between members of different religions and denominations. In 1993/94 he was the initiator and concept developer for the human rights award of the city of Weimar . When Volkhardt Germer won the mayoral election in 1994 , he resigned from his position.

From 1994 to 1997 he developed anti-discrimination concepts in the office of the Foreigners Commissioner for the State of Brandenburg , e.g. B. for the Brandenburg police. In 1994 he was a scholarship holder of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and toured the USA. From 1998 to 2007 Michael Hugo led projects for the professional integration of immigrants and was honorary managing director of the Rostock association Diên Hông . Since 2002 he has headed the Migration Integration Service in the region of Central Mecklenburg and North Western Pomerania, since 2008 sponsored by migra eV (Rostock), of which he is honorary managing director.

In 2007 Hugo was appointed by Minister of Social Affairs Erwin Sellering as a member of the Integration Advisory Council of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to promote the integration of migrants. Michael Hugo is an honorary member of the board of the Intercultural Council in Germany , a founding member of the Rostock citizens' initiative Bunt statt Braun eV, member of the support associations of Pro Asyl , Alexanderdorf Monastery , Biestow Church, and the Society for Threatened Peoples as well as a member of the Paul Schneider Gesellschaft Weimar eV He is a member of the Rostock interreligious discussion group, which unites Muslims, Jews and Christians under the umbrella of the Evangelical Academy of the Northern Church. From 2008 to 2013 Hugo studied social education at the University of Neubrandenburg and graduated with a diploma.

Awards

  • In 2000 Hugo was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Medal of Merit) by Federal President Johannes Rau .
  • In 2003 he and the Diên Hông association received the Federal President's Integration Prize from Johannes Rau.
  • Hugo received the Gustav Heinemann Citizens' Prize from SPD federal chairman Gerhard Schröder for his "tireless commitment ... for the support and integration of foreign fellow citizens" and his public statements "against right-wing extremism".
