The German Society for Peace and Conflict Research (DGFK) was a society founded on the initiative of Gustav Heinemann , which financially promoted and coordinated peace and conflict research . The DGFK coordinated studies on the various (for example, psychological, social, historical, political and economic) aspects and causes of acts of war and civil war and was involved in the allocation of public funding to corresponding research projects.

history

The DGFK was founded on October 28, 1970 on the initiative of Heinemann in Bonn . The DGFK was financed by funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Science in the amount of 1.2 million DM for 1970 and 2.9 million DM for 1971. In addition to the federal and state governments , the umbrella organizations of employees and employers were also involved in its establishment the churches and the Central Council of Jews in Germany participated. The task of the society should be to promote scientific peace research by coordinating and allocating federal funds to specific projects. During the time of its existence, the DGFK funded around 360 different studies in the entire field of peace studies, but the focus of the funded projects can be found in the areas of peacekeeping and transition strategies in Europe as well as conflicts between western European industrialized and developing countries . As early as 1983, the company stopped its work because the federal government and CDU / CSU- led state governments had withdrawn its financial basis . The Bavarian state government in particular was opposed to the promotion of peace research with public funds and Franz Josef Strauss initiated the dissolution of the DGFK at the end of 1983 on the basis of an expert report prepared by Hans-Joachim Arndt .
