Since August 1998 she can be seen as the main presenter in the studio in the main edition of heute news at 7 p.m. In January 2020, Gerster announced that he would be leaving ZDF.

For her life's work, Petra Gerster will receive the Hedwig Dohm certificate from the Association of Women Journalists in 2020, which honors her more than 30 years of work for ZDF at the women's magazine ML Mona Lisa and as a presenter of primetime. "She made women linguistically visible earlier than others, changed her moderation in a clever and elegant way," says the reasoning.
