Christian Nürnberger (born April 1, 1951 in the city of Lauf an der Pegnitz ) is a German publicist .

Life

Christian Nürnberger, who comes from a smallholder family, completed an apprenticeship as a physics laboratory assistant. He spent four years in the Bundeswehr ( lieutenant in the reserve ), studied Protestant theology, philosophy and pedagogy for four semesters, graduated from the Hamburg Henri Nannen School and began his journalistic practice as a local reporter for the Frankfurter Rundschau . Later he was an editor at the business magazine Capital and head of text at highTech .

Nürnberger lives in Mainz with his wife, the television journalist Petra Gerster , and two children . Since 1990, after the birth of his first child, he has worked as a freelance writer - for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit , among others - and as a publicist. In the television program Menschen bei Maischberger , he self-ironically said that for a year he had "done the whole program as a househusband - cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing, shopping, changing diapers -" and had aged ten years and had gray hair. His political views were based on a social democratic-Christian foundation, which is why he has become an advocate of any aspirations for emancipation, especially among women.

For brave people: Resistance in the Third Reich , Nürnberger was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize 2010 . In the jury's justification it was said that Nürnberger succeeded in “building up a tension through a skilfully simple, almost oral narrative style that captivates from the first to the last sentence”. "The outstanding literary quality of the biographical story" was also highlighted.

For The Rebel Monk, the Runaway Nun and the greatest bestseller of all time, Martin Luther , the Emys Non-Fiction Prize went to Gabriel Verlag in January 2017. The jury described the book as "an impressive, entertaining and instructive reading about Luther and his time, which stands out from the multitude of titles already published for the anniversary year and does not argue for a moment with a raised index finger".

Guest appearance in politics

In November 2012, Christian Nürnberger was nominated in his home country as a Bundestag candidate of the SPD for the constituency of Roth and Nürnberger Land . With position 33 on the list assigned to him by the party, however, a move into the Bundestag was excluded from the outset, because the direct mandates in Bavaria go almost exclusively to the CSU. Nevertheless, Nürnberger resolutely carried out his election campaign for a year and then achieved the fifth-best result among Bavaria's SPD candidates with 46,200 votes. Nürnberger describes this year-long foray into politics as his “voluntary social year”. He now lives again in Mainz, where he continues his previous journalistic activities.

  2. ^ Prize winner 2010 - non-fiction book. Jury statement. In: "German Youth Literature Prize". Working group for youth literature e. V., accessed on October 25, 2010 (dynamically generated web page, so the publication date could not be determined.): “What is a brave person? Christian Nürnberger pursues this question in twelve portraits of people in the resistance, each paired opposite one another. In each of these biographical essays, the author takes a stand in a very personal and committed tone, which also encourages and guides the reader to make their own judgment. With a skillfully simple, almost oral narrative style, Nürnberger succeeds in building up a tension that captivates from the first to the last sentence. [...] If it is true that every generation needs its own narrator, who knows how to report historical events from a suitable perspective and to ask current questions, then today's young generation has found its author in Christian Nürnberger: He tells exactly, committed and very personal in a way that not only stimulates the reader's judgment, but also demands it. The outstanding literary quality of the biographical narrative is also convincing, which is evident in the individual cut of the individual portraits and in a very precise and delicately formulated literary language. [...] Courageous people convincingly combine well-founded historical information with political commitment at a high linguistic level. "
