Ludwig Ott (born August 24, 1906 in Neumarkt-St. Helena , † August 25, 1985 in Eichstätt ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and Medievalist .

Life

After training at the Philosophical-Theological University of Eichstätt , Ott was ordained a priest in 1930 . He did his doctorate in Munich (1931–1936) under Martin Grabmann and was instructed by him on the development of medieval theology. In 1936 he became associate professor and in 1941 full professor of dogmatics at the episcopal philosophical-theological college in Eichstätt. From 1960 to 1962 he was the rector of this Catholic university.

His research was mostly in the field of dogmatics, especially early scholasticism , for example on Hugo von St. Viktor . With his “Grundriss der Dogmatik” he presented an authoritative standard work of dogmatics, which is particularly suitable for study purposes. The work for priests and laypeople has been translated into several languages (including Arabic) and has been published more than ten times. His re-edition of Grabmann's important work "Medieval Spiritual Life", the publication of the estate of this important medievalist and his collaboration on the handbook of the history of dogma are also scientifically worthy of merit .
