Güner Yasemin Balcı (born February 9, 1975 in Berlin ) is a German journalist , television editor and writer .

Life

Balcı's parents come from Turkey and belong to the Zaza ethnic group . You came to Germany as guest workers in the 1960s . Balcı was born in Berlin-Neukölln and grew up there. She was raised Alevi ; so she and her family did not wear a headscarf.

After graduating from high school, she first studied education and literature . She then worked temporarily in a model project for violence and crime prevention in the Rollbergviertel , a social hotspot in Neukölln, and in a girls' club for young people from Turkish and Arab families.

She works as a freelance journalist and television writer. She deals critically with the situation of migrants in German society in reports and reports for Die Zeit , Spiegel Online and Panorama, among others . Until the end of 2008 she worked as a television editor at ZDF for the television magazine Frontal21 .

In September 2008, S. Fischer Verlag published her debut novel Arabboy - Eine Jugend in Deutschland or the short life of Rashid A. , which Spiegel-Online labeled it as a “Milieu-Roman”. It was discussed in detail in the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the taz , among others . Balci was interviewed about her book on Deutschlandfunk and at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Nicole Oder adapted the novel for the theater in the year of its publication. The play Arabboy was premiered on May 29, 2009 in the home port of Neukölln in Berlin . Directed by Nicole Oder.

An adaptation of Balcı's second book ArabQueen or the Taste of Freedom premiered in November 2010 under the title Arabqueen or the other life in the “Heimathafen Neukölln”. The novel on which the play is based describes the life of Mariam, who comes from a strictly Muslim family. Unlike her brothers, she is hardly given any freedom there, which leads to a double life between cultures.

In July 2010, the documentary Kampf im Klassenzimmer , which was shot by Balcı and Nicola Graef , was broadcast on ARD .

In 2012, together with Nicola Graef, Balcı was awarded the Civis TV Prize for the report Death of a Judge - In the footsteps of Kirsten Heisig on the WDR TV series People Up Close . In December 2015, her film Der Jungfrauenwahn was shown on arte , for which she received the Bavarian Television Award in 2016 because, in the opinion of the jury, she succeeded in advocating for the freedom and self-determination of women while at the same time protecting the privacy and To demand the prerequisites for a modern and contemporary society of different cultures ”.

Balcı is a founding member of the Muslim Forum Germany, which was founded in 2015 .

In autumn 2019, her documentary The Great Journey - Seyran Ateş and the Path to Reformed Islam was broadcast on ZDF . For this purpose, Balcı accompanied the first German Imamin Seyran Ateş for a year and a half in the construction of the liberal Ibn Rushd Goethe Mosque in Berlin.

In August 2020 Balci was commissioner for integration of Neukölln .
