Hajo Schumacher (born April 22, 1964 in Münster ) is a German journalist and author .

Life

education and profession

After studying journalism , political science and psychology , Schumacher worked for Spiegel from 1990 to 2000 , most recently as co-director of the Berlin office. From 2000 to 2002 he was editor-in-chief of the lifestyle magazine Max in Hamburg. In 2006 he received his PhD thesis in power physics. Leadership strategies of the CDU chairwoman Angela Merkel in the inner-party network of power 2000-2004 with Karl-Rudolf Korte at the University of Duisburg-Essen for Dr. phil. PhD.

Today Schumacher writes as a freelance author for daily newspapers, magazines, radio, online and television. He comments on political events for RTL, N24, WDR and RBB. He lives with his family as a freelance journalist in Berlin .

From 2004 to 2012 he was editor of the media magazine ViSdP , from 2006 to 2009 he moderated the weekly talk show Links-Rechts on N24 together with the former photo journalist Hans-Hermann Tiedje . Together with Jörg Schönbohm (“The Conservative / Right”) he formed the sidekick from the balcony as “The Left” on Stuckrad Late Night on the ZDFneo channel from December 2010 to 2011 inclusive . Under the pseudonym Achim Achilles , Schumacher wrote columns for Spiegel Online from 2004 on about runners, walkers and the idiosyncrasies of many amateur athletes. Some columns have been published as books. In May 2012, allegations of copyright infringement against Schumacher were made public. He had taken over texts from Jens Karraß in a book , which the latter had only made available for the jointly operated website as part of a collaboration that had meanwhile ended. Karraß obtained a cease and desist declaration against Schumacher in March 2012 .

On March 12, 2019, Schumacher announced in a video message that after 15 years he is retiring his alter ego "Achim Achilles" and will become the "running supervisory board" of the new Achilles running running side.

Other engagement

Schumacher is a member of the juries of the media prizes Lead Award (magazines category), Reemtsma Liberty Award 2008 and the Political Award 2013. Hajo Schumacher also acts as a moderator of award ceremonies, galas, symposia and specialist conferences, including the German Prize for Online communication, the Human Resources Management Congress 2013 or as laudator for the Grimme Online Awards .

He is a member of the advisory board of the magazine Politik & Kommunikation .

Under the pseudonym Achim Achilles, Schumacher used his fame for charity runs and similar projects until 2019.

Positions

In 2011, Schumacher defended Silvana Koch-Mehrin against allegations of plagiarism in connection with her doctoral thesis . He criticized the associated reaction of the German media and especially that of Spiegel-Online. In this context he explained: “This is not about [...] Koch-Mehrin. It's about journalistic standards ”- and about the“ wretched self-righteousness of the digital block attendant ”. The Süddeutsche Zeitung subsequently asked about a possible conflict of interests Schumacher, since his wife, Susanne Schumacher, had written a book together with Koch-Mehrin in 2007 under the title Sisters: Policies for a New Feminism . Schumacher denied a conflict of interest. He stated that he had not taken Koch-Mehrin under protection.
