Harald Höppner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harald Hoeppner (born 1972 or 1973 ) is a German distress rescue activist and entrepreneur . As a private person, he initiated the Sea Watch project , which resulted in the Sea-Watch eV association , which provides personnel and ships for the rescue of boat refugees in the Mediterranean who are in distress at sea .

Life

Höppner comes from a family of doctors and grew up in East Berlin . After the fall of the Wall, he traveled the world, first in China. Later he traveled a lot to buy goods, for example in India and Mexico . Since 2000 he has been running a shop for exotic furniture and clothing in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg , since 2005 an online shop and since 2008 another shop in Berlin-Kreuzberg in the same segment together with his wife. The couple now has three sons and lives in Tempelfelde in Brandenburg .

After visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial on November 9, 2014, the commemoration day for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, he compared the current refugees from the Mediterranean with the former GDR refugees and thought of a project to help. With 60,000 euros saved, he organized the former fishing cutter Sea-Watch I in Amsterdam, built in 1917 . A further donation of 60,000 euros made it possible to renovate Hamburg and convert it into a rescue ship for eight crew members with a satellite system. The ship is not supposed to take refugees, but to help others with emergency signals, life jackets, life rafts and medical first aid.

He called the project Sea-Watch , correspondingly the name of the ship and the Sea-Watch eV association

Höppner used a variety of media to draw attention to the project. He made a striking appearance on April 19, 2015 on the ARD talk show Günther Jauch , where he unexpectedly enforced a minute's silence , initially against Günther Jauch's will .
