Karl Heinrich Diederich Kühns (also: Carl Heinrich Diederich Kühns , born September 25, 1850 in Lüneburg ; † April 22, 1918 in Hanover ) was a German dentist , patron and freemason as well as a pioneer in the development of systematic dental care for school children.

Life

Born in Lüneburg at the time of the Kingdom of Hanover . 1866 Start of apprenticeship as a pharmacist in Lüneburg and Dresden. 1873 Studied dentistry at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin with state examination and practice as a dentist in Hanover in 1875. 1883 co-founder of the "Dental Association for Lower Saxony" and 1887-1908 its chairman. Carl Kühns opened "[...] the first private dental outpatient clinic in Germany" in 1888 during the founding years of the German Empire in Hanover . The clinic founded by Kühns "[...] was open to all poor ", especially children, but also destitute adults.

Kühns was one of those dentists in Germany who carried out series examinations on children to promote both the first initiatives and the further development of systematic dental care for school children.

In 1895 Carl Kühns wrote a philosophical dissertation at the University of Erlangen . The following year, on March 5, 1896, Kühns was accepted into the Masonic lodge Zum Schwarzen Bär in Hanover .
