Mustafa Akıncı (born December 28, 1947 in Limassol ) is a Turkish Cypriot politician . He has been the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus since April 30, 2015 .

Personal life and education

Akıncı grew up in Limassol. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of the Middle East in Ankara in 1973 . After graduating, he settled in North Nicosia. He is married to Meral Akıncı and has three children and two grandchildren. In addition to Turkish, he also speaks English.

Political career

He was a member of the Constituent Assembly of the Turkish Federal State of Cyprus . He was the first mayor of the Turkish part of North Nicosia , the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and held this post for 14 years from 1976 to 1990. As Mayor of North Nicosia, he worked with the Mayor of the Greek part of Nicosia.

He played an important role in founding the Kıbrıs Türk Belediyeler Birliği and was its first chairman.

From 1987 to 2011 he was party leader of the Toplumcu Kurtuluş Partisi and from 1993 to 2009 a member of the Assembly of the Republic . From 1999 to 2001 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . With the establishment of the Toplumcu Demokrasi Partisi , he resigned from his position as party leader. In the 2015 presidential election in Northern Cyprus , he won 60.3% against incumbent Derviş Eroğlu . After his election, Akıncı declared that he wanted to negotiate reunification with Nikos Anastasiadis , President of the Republic of Cyprus . The first negotiations took place in May 2015.
